Confucius lived during China's Classical Age, which was the age of a "hundred schools of thought". He was born in 551 BC. He was involved in government and travelled around China. He had many revolutionary philosophical ideas, which were eventually turned in the religion 'Confucianism'. Many of his ideas were written in The Analects, which eventually became the guide of China's civilization. He believed that to get rid of evil, you had to be benevolent, and there is even evidence of a philosophy of 'and do not do unto others that which you would not have them do unto you (the golden rule). He knew that learning was a very important part of life and believed in both a formal (school) and informal (experience) education. He wanted schools to be open to everyone no matter their social class. He thought these schools should include education in history, poetry, etiquette, music, and physical education. This shows that at this point in China's history, society was based more on art principles rather than on math or science principles. He also believed that humans never fully finish learning until they are 70 years old. This remark shows that life expectancy was longer than other civilizations at this time, because it indicates that it was expected you would live to be 70.
Confucius believed in the rectification of names. This doctrine means that there is a universal definition of what a good father was, what a good ruler was etc... and that as people moved from stage to stage in life they should just try to be good at what they are, and not try to be a role they are not.
Conficius is one of the most influential people in Chinese history. Over 80 generations followed his teachings and beliefs which means that he helped shape Chinese culture more than any other individual.
