Like many other civilizations, China emerged from Neolithic tribes. Around 7000 BC, permanent villages and settlements began to pop up near the Yellow River. Like Egypt, this northern area of China was dry and didn't have a lot of rain, so the flooding of the Yellow River was essential to making farming possible. Common crops were wheat, legumes, and millet (a grain). The early Chinese also ate meat from pigs, chickens and dogs. Much later, settlements on the Yangtze River to the South were established. This environment in this area was ideal for growing rice, which became an essential part of the Chinese diet.
China is surrounded by mountains, deserts , flatlands and the Pacific ocean, so it was isolated from other civilizations, much like Egypt.
